Welcoming All to Worship, Grow and Serve Together

There is something powerful about a song. A few notes can bring back a memory, lift a weary heart, give us courage, or help us say what words alone cannot. Scripture understands this. Again and again, God’s people sing—in celebration, in sorrow, in gratitude, and in hope. This week, with the passing of Dolly Parton, the world is remembering a woman whose songs became part of the soundtrack of millions of lives. Her voice reminds us that music is more than entertainment; at its best, it is a gift passed from one heart to another.

But Dolly Parton gave in other ways, too. Behind the rhinestones and larger-than-life personality was a remarkable spirit of generosity. Her Imagination Library placed hundreds of millions of books into the hands of young children, and she quietly supported education, families in need, disaster relief, and medical research. She seemed to understand something deeply Christian: the gifts we have been given are not meant only for ourselves. Whether our gift is a beautiful singing voice, the ability to teach, a listening ear, a generous heart, or simply the willingness to help when help is needed, God can use it to touch another life.

Most of us will never sing before an arena full of people or have our names known around the world. But every one of us has something to give. Perhaps that is one of the lessons worth carrying forward this week: a life is measured not simply by what we accomplish, but by what we share. So sing the hymn. Read the book to a child. Make the meal. Write the note. Give quietly. Encourage someone who needs it. God has given each of us a song to sing—and sometimes the most beautiful part of that song is what we give away.

See you in church.
